Sexbierum

Sexbierum is a small village in the north of the Netherlands. It has about 1800 inhabitants, together with the village Pietersbierum. Both villages have grown connecting each other, so most people see it as a double-village partnership.

Sexbierum is located some 7 kilometers north from both Harlingen and Franeker, two of the famous (?) eleven cities of Friesland, one of the two most northern provinces of the Netherlands.

The name is derived from Sixtus-buren, the place of the Saint Sixtus. After Saint Sixtus also the local church is devoted. The Frisian name Seisbierrum is believed to be derived from Six-roadsides (Frisian: seis bjirmen), designating the six roadsides of a tri-way road: Sexbierum is located at a very ancient roadcrossing.
